What is Baby Eczema?

Eczema is one of the most common skin complaints in Infants and small children. It can affect children of any age, starting with newborns. Most cases of Infant Eczema are mild, and can be treated with mild skin ointments. However some children do have serious and chronic eczema, often Eczema occurs along with other kinds of conditions such as allergies, hay fever and asthma. Such children need special care, making sure that the environment they live in is clean and healthy. Although Eczema is not curable, there is a lot that can be done to make the child comfortable and make it easy for him to cope with Eczema.

Eczema is a condition of dry, extra-sensitive skin. Most Infants will outgrow it by the time they are two to three years old. Children who still have it will usually outgrow it by the time they become teenagers. Eczema is a vicious cycle! Something irritates your child’s skin, making it red and inflamed. When it itches the child rubs it making the skin more inflamed. The outer protective layer of the skin is lost and the affected area becomes extra-extra-sensitive to irritants. Another rash develops and the cycle perpetuates itself.
